Bertha Honoré Palmer -- A Legacy of Greatness

At the turn of the last century an extraordinary woman discovered an unspoiled slice of paradise on the shores of Little Sarasota Bay in Osprey. The woman was Mrs. Bertha Honoré Palmer, a celebrated Chicago socialite, businesswoman, and philanthropist, renowned for her substantial contributions to women's, children’s, and cultural initiatives.

The land had no name. But Mrs. Palmer was enthralled by its picturesque splendor and tranquil ambiance. Over time, she purchased more than 80,000 acres, including a thousand-acre parcel on Little Sarasota Bay, and made it her winter home, bestowing on her estate the name we know it as today: The Oaks.

In the years that followed, Mrs. Palmer created a gracious home with lavishly cultivated gardens, walkways, and ponds. Sarasota quickly became a winter retreat for businesses leaders, politicians, artists, writers, and trendsetters. The world came to her door at The Oaks and she entertained it. Today, Bertha Palmer’s legacy of culture, love of nature, and the finer things in life continues—at The Oaks Club.

Zoning and actual development of The Oaks Club was initiated in the early 1980’s. Two outstanding golf courses were designed and named by legendary golf course architect, Willard Byrd, and built by Ted Mc Andlis of West Palm Beach, Florida. In 1999, The Oaks Club was sold to its Equity Members. A 40,000 sq. foot clubhouse, designed by classical architect, Bo MacEwen, offers three outstanding dining venues open year-round. Rounding out the resort are twelve HAR-TRU® tennis courts, main pool, and playground.

We’re proud to participate in this tradition—and Mrs. Palmer's commissioned portrait hangs proudly in our Library.

  • Who We Are

    About Us

The good life—built on a solid foundation

The Oaks Club is a very special place. We’re the area’s only private, member-owned golf course community offering two championship golf courses, award-winning tennis programs, an elegant club, and three of the best restaurants in town. The Oaks Club is also a close-knit community of people who make lifelong connections and carry on time-honored traditions. It’s a good life indeed—built on a solid foundation.

That foundation is the people who live here. The Oaks Club has been member-owned and member-governed for the past decade. Management is driven by the needs and desires of the members rather than by the needs of a developer. We have a board of governors, elected by the membership, which oversees the operation and financial health of the Club and hires professional managers to run the day-to-day operations. Additionally, there are several committees composed of members who volunteer to focus on specific areas of the Club. A long-range strategic plan ensures that the Club remains vital and strong.

Residents of The Oaks Club community are required to join the Club as Equity or Social members. This form of membership is important, because it ensures the Club’s financial stability, helps to promote social interaction among the members, and reinforces the sense of community. Non-residents may participate in the Club as Associates.

A true community is more than bricks and mortar. It’s people who come together to share cultural and recreational passions, create social gatherings, and work together to promote philanthropic projects in the area. We built our community on these truths. We created a welcoming place of shelter and security, beauty and tranquility. Families grow here, and neighbors become lasting friends. We’re a community that honors its deep roots. Our Vision is that The Oaks Club will be the private country club of choice in the Sarasota area. The club will provide an exceptional experience for golf, tennis, and other desired recreational activities, and will maintain the highest standards for a variety of dining services, social, and family program.

Mrs. Bertha Honoré Palmer, the visionary woman who came to this area because of its beauty and potential, left a legacy that has lasted a century. We also take the long view. Your investment in our community is an investment in your family's future. As Mrs. Palmer knew, it's a legacy that will last.
